Set of Apothecary Specie Jars. (Ltd Ed. Reproductions)A set of six Specie Jars that were produced for the NPA (National Pharmacy Association) in 1989. The series of reproductions comprised of six jars was limited to just 500 sets worldwide. Each jar is 13” (330mm) high with a diameter of 6½” (165mm) and includes a 22ct gold plated cap.
They are modelled on an original form used to house crude or powdered drug and each container is individually coloured from within to form a background and hand applied armorial lettering in gilt, heraldic colours and gold leaf is then applied externally to faithfully replicate the originals. Each of the vessels is individually made and therefore unique from the manufacturer (Carlyle Fine Collections Ltd who produced reproduction pieces of pharmaceutical and medical significance.) This particular set was purchased for display purposes in a retail chemist shop, all without any chips or cracks and are presented with relevant paperwork. The group photos shown are library photos from the original advertising literature, whilst the individual photos are the actual items. Three come supplied in original packing & have never been displayed. Date : 1989 (Reproductions)

Delftware Pill Tile (Reproduction)A 1980’s reproduction of a 16th Century Pill Tile. These were used as a level & impermeable base on which to mix up the ‘pill mass’.This ‘pill mass’ is divided accurately into equal parts equivalent to the number of pills ordered. In earlier days this procedure was carried out on a pill tile. The mass would be rolled into a ball, and then gradually rolled into a long even pipe. By measuring the pipe and dividing by the number of pills required, the size of each pill could be calculated and the pipe cut into portions. Later tiles had graduations so that the pipe could be rolled to a specific length equal to the required number of graduations.
Made for display in the pharmacy by Chaslyn Fine China of Stoke-on-Trent (who produced a range of pharmaceutical china reproductions in the early 1980’s) it is modelled on originals that are displayed in the Wellcome Museum of Science in London. Date : Approx 1980 (Reproduction)
Dimensions : 11” (280mm) x 10” (252mm) and is ½” (15mm) thick. More detailed images are shown on the right.

Delftware Albarello Drug Jar of Rob Sambucci.A fine blue and white traditional delftware reproduction drug jar. Labelled Rob Sambucci (Juice of the fruit from the Common Elder [Sambucus Nigra]) which was often sweetened with honey to form a syrupy liquid.
An albarello type drug jar standing 12½” (318mm) tall including the lid and 5¼” (133mm) diameter at the base and 6” (153mm) at its widest point. Drug jars made from tin-glazed delftware (majolica) were used extensively in Italian apothecaries in the 16th century. They were well suited to this purpose, being impermeable and easy to clean, while their decoration often included scrolls or a cartouche inscribed with a description of the contents. The original jars were usually produced in sets. The number and style varied, depending on their destination. A large set might be ordered for a hospital or monastic order, while a set for domestic use would be smaller. The decoration could include the initials of an institution or the coat of arms of the family. This reproduction is presented in new condition with no chips or scratches. It is undated but I believe it to be one of the NPA (National Pharmacy Assoc) reproductions from 1983. Date : Approx 1983 (Reproduction)
Dimensions : 12½” (318mm) tall including the lid, 5¼” (133mm) diameter at the base and 6” (153mm) at its widest point. More detailed images are shown on the right.

Dr King Dandelion and Quinine Liver Pills. (1900’s)An unopened pack of Dr King Dandelion and Quinine Liver Pills from the turn of the 20th Century. Popular as a treatment for bilious conditions and as a diuretic, only dandelion & mercury seem to historically have had acknowledged effects on the liver. With mercury rapidly become recognised as a toxic substance(*) its use was abandoned in many oral medications, and manufacturer’s played on this insecurity.
Dr King Pills appear to have been heavily advertised in the press from the 1850’s through to the early 1900’s. They proved particularly popular abroad in the colonies as they contained a small amount of quinine. This pack is unopened and still retains the Powdrills Chemists of Old Road, Clacton-on-Sea label & price from the turn of the century. Date : Approx 1890-1910
Dimensions : Packaging 1.5" (40mm) x 1.5" (40mm) x 7/10" (17mm) More detailed images are shown on the right.

Glycerine Lozenge Display Case. (H & T Kirby & Co. Ltd.)An unusual small chemist display case showing a range of dummy glycerine lozenges. (The examples are actually glass) and are shown in a small mirror backed display case.
These ‘lozenges’ are presumably used to show the range of colours available. They are affixed to a mirrored back and enclosed in a card display case. The lid removes and has a gilt pattern around the clear glass top. Each Lozenge is approx 1” (25mm) in diameter. The back of the case is marked with the name and a code (H & T Kirby & Co. Ltd. 2000. 14.11.29) which I take to be the date (14th November 1929) this is shown in the photos and warns that these are “Glass Dummies” I guess that this may be a salesman’s sample of the range available and would be used to demonstrate the choice available. An unusual piece, and in excellent presentable condition. H & T Kirby were manufacturing chemists based in Belton Road, Willesden Green, London NW2 but they appeared to also be recorded at 14 Newman Street, off Oxford Street, in London. They seem to have been active as a company between 1920’s and late 1940’s. Date : Approx 1929 -1930
Dimensions : 6.5" (165mm) x 4.75" (120mm) x .5" (15mm) deep More detailed images are shown on the right.
